About the workThis motif is unusual both for the landscape painter Hermann Emil Pohle and for the time in which it was created. He may have produced it for the 1887 art exhibition "A Forged Picture Gallery", organised by the Düsseldorf artists' association Malkasten. The exhibition featured ironic imitations of well-known paintings. Pohle’s work could be a parody of Arthur Kampf’s painting "The Final Statement", which depicts a mortally wounded man giving testimony to the police. In contrast, Pohle exaggerates the staging of misery and murder, turning it into a bloodthirsty spectacle, thereby critiquing its artificial dramatisation.
