The collection of furniture, vessels, books, textiles and other everyday objects from Europe, Asia and the Middle East has its origins in the former Düsseldorf Museum of Applied Arts (1883–1927). From 1985 onwards, the collection was expanded to include design, including Bauhaus objects by Mies van der Rohe and Marianne Brandt, New German Design by Stiletto and Kunstflug, and creations by Italian designers such as Alessandro Mendini.
