About the workThe Düsseldorf artist Max Stern, pictured on the right of this image with a goatee, has captured a dream: he congratulates Karl Koetschau, the founding director of Düsseldorf’s municipal art collection from 1913 to 1934, on his sixtieth birthday. Accompanying him are four muses – patron goddesses of the arts from ancient mythology – who offer Koetschau their good wishes too. Koetschau was friends with Julius Stern, a Jewish gallery owner in Düsseldorf and the father of Max Stern. Koetschau was also one of Max Stern’s teachers at Bonn University, where he studied art history from 1923 to 1928.
