Study of a Boat, ca. 1766-1816
Red chalk
Sheet dimensions20,1 × 24,1 cm
About the workAcademy professor Adrian Zingg used to roam the countryside around Dresden and the Elbe Sandstone Mountains with his drawing students to prepare studies for his landscape paintings. Perhaps this detailed sketch of a cargo ship was also created during such a hike. The skipper resting at the bow is only noticeable at a second glance. To bring his landscapes to life, Zingg would include walkers enjoying nature and representatives of the working population as “staffage” or accessory figures in his images.
