About the workPeter Keetman was a central figure in post-war German photography and a member of the Subjective Photography movement, which sought to capture an individual’s perception and experience of the world through a new visual language. Commissioned by the Volkswagen factory in Wolfsburg, these photographs differ from Keetman’s otherwise abstract artistic works. The series documents the production of the VW Beetle, focusing on its forms. This specific depiction of the manufacturing processes makes the images emblematic of the dynamism of the “Wirtschaftswunder” (economic miracle) era.
