About the workHeinrich Kühn is regarded as a pictorialist. The term describes a movement that emerged towards the end of the nineteenth century: it explored the artistic possibilities of photography and, by emphasising its similarities to painting, strove for the medium to be recognised as an art form. Elaborate fine printing processes achieved effects similar to brushstrokes. Typical characteristics of the images included a slight blurring and a mostly warm colour scheme. For these photographs, Kühn photographed his sons Hans and Walther in various everyday situations.
