About the workEven as early as 1900, people were already looking to escape the metropolis to relax. Heinrich Zille photographed everyday scenes on the streets of Berlin, but also goings-on in rural areas, such as the men picking flowers and herbs on the banks of the Main here. The title of one of the images alludes to the faun: an ancient Roman forest spirit with the horns and legs of a goat who symbolises uninhibited lust in literature and art. Zille thus wittily emphasises the nakedness of the two men in the foreground. His photographic work was not discovered until many years after his death.
