About the workVarious European aristocratic houses used the services of the photographer Charles Clifford in the mid-nineteenth century. From 1850, he ran a photography studio in Madrid together with his wife Jane. He took this picture of a knight’s armour as the court photographer to Queen Isabella II of Spain. The attention to detail and the play of light between the dark background and the gleaming metal testify to the photographer’s exceptional skill.
