About the workCaspar Scheuren’s centenary print for Mumm champagne was created as a work of commercial art. The subject of celebration is Peter Arnold Mumm, who founded a wine trading and banking company in Cologne in 1761. His son Gottlieb later took over the wine trade, including the Johannisberg wine estate in the Rheingau in 1811, which is featured in the illustrated landscape. In 1827 Gottlieb co-founded the champagne house “P.A. Mumm & Co.” in Rheims, named after his father. After Gottlieb’s death, the business was continued by his son Hermann, who commissioned this commemorative image.
