About the workThe design and gilding of these carafes and glasses are in the European tradition, but the painted motifs of fish, shrimp and aquatic plants are an unusual addition. This service was created during the heyday of Japonism, when all of Europe looked towards the hitherto unfamiliar art and culture of Japan. Émile Gallé ran a glass and ceramics business with its own decoration workshop in Nancy. Before establishing his own glassworks there in 1894, the glass was manufactured by Burgun, Schverer & Co. in Meisenthal, Alsace. Some of the decoration was also carried out there.
