The Dillmann Family from Koblenz (later Tillmann), 1832
MediumOil on canvas
Dimensions without frame197 × 170,5 cm
About the workIt is no coincidence that Simon Meister portrayed the Dillmann family on board a ship on the Moselle at the point where it flows into the Rhine at the “Deutsches Eck” (German Corner). The Koblenz family maintained a fleet of ships and several vineyards. The ship’s sail shields them. With this motif, the painter was able to establish a private space with a view of the landscape that was so important to the family. The retreat into the private sphere is considered typical of the period, as early industrialisation produced a wealthy middle class.
