About the workAccording to tradition, Saint Christopher was a ferryman in the Middle East in the fifth century AD. It is said that he once carried the infant Jesus – and with him the whole weight of the world – across a river on his shoulders. He has been venerated as the patron saint of travellers since the Middle Ages. The figure exhibits stylistic innovations that artists in southern Germany had adopted from Italy. These include the standing motif with the left hand placed playfully on the hip and the naturalistic, pronounced physicality. The work is one of the few sculptures in the round by this sculptor, whose name is derived from his altar relief in the church of the Benedictine abbey in Ottobeuren.
