on display, room 010.2 About the workThe Düsseldorf painter Peter Schwingen became known for his portraits of people in interiors. Here, he presumably did not depict a specific person; the main theme is the calm atmosphere. A woman has set up a workplace by the window to embroider. With the gilded picture frames, the mantelpiece with bust and the large window, Schwingen depicts an upper-class environment. The furnishings and composition of the picture convey a well-organised world. The Düsseldorf curator Walter Cohen, who purchased the painting in 1929, is regarded to have rediscovered the painter, who had long been forgotten.
