About the work Andreas Achenbach had already experienced the dangers but also the fascination of seafaring at a young age while travelling to St. Petersburg. As a graduate of the Düsseldorf Art Academy, he began to paint the theme of capsizing ships with great success. In this early work, four ships are at the mercy of lashing waves. In the foreground, people are fighting for survival on the wrecked mast, while other vessels are in danger of sinking. The drama is heightened by the calm sky and the immediacy of the action.
