About the workNancy Grossman became familiar with a wide variety of textiles and the ways in which they are processed through her parents, who worked in the clothing industry. This sculpture is the first in a series of intricately carved, leather-covered wooden heads with added prostheses. Grossman described these pieces created between the 1960s and the 1980s as self-portraits. The Düsseldorf collector and tax consultant Willi Kemp acquired this work in 1969, when the series was exhibited for the first time.
