About the workWhat becomes apparent here – shifting cracks in the ice of a glacier or the scarred bark of a birch tree? This painting by Carl Buchheister plays with perception. The depiction moves between close-up and distant views, between recognisable natural forms and free composition. Created from the 1950s onwards, the material paintings by the Hanover-based artist require an open mind: strings, wires, cork and pieces of paper become key elements – as traces of the world outside the picture.
