About the workErnst Ludwig Kirchner mostly painted and only produced a few sculptures. This standing female figure is inspired by African sculptures, which the artist studied carefully. The art of non-European cultures seemed foreign and exotic to the members of the Brücke artists’ group, who also admired its striking formal design. Kirchner carved this figure from a piece of driftwood he had found on the beach on Fehmarn. The rotation he gave to this “African” figure has its roots in the European pictorial tradition.
