About the workStriding with her hands on her hips, a young woman balances a water jug on her head. The German-American sculptor Bernhard Sopher picks up on the element of water with his fountain sculpture. Due to his Jewish origins, the bronze sculpture was dismantled in 1938 and only saved from destruction by the National Socialists when his wife reacquired it. After the Second World War, she donated the work to the Kunstmuseum so that it could return to its original place in the Rheinpark in 1954. Sopher, who had lived in Düsseldorf since 1908, was a member of the artists’ association “Junges Rheinland”. In 1935, he fled from the National Socialists to the United States, where he eventually became an American citizen.
