About the workNothing except the blue strip at the top of the image refers to the nocturnal motif mentioned in the title. Vibrant lines, colourful dots and fields of colour combine to form a dynamic web. During a study trip to Paris at the end of the 1920s, Louise Rösler became more familiar with non-representational art. However, the Berlin painter’s work was almost brought to a halt by the restrictions imposed by the Nazis – tantamount to a ban – and the Second World War. It was only after 1945 that she turned to abstraction and began to deconstruct recognisable items into energetic structures.
