on display, room 027 About the workHilla von Rebay donated this work to the art museum in Düsseldorf in 1951 following an exhibition there of non-representational painting from the collection of Solomon R. Guggenheim. The German artist’s own style was influenced by Wassily Kandinsky and Rudolf Bauer. She was the founding director of the Guggenheim Museum in New York and introduced an uncompromising programme of mystical, abstract art that was preferably viewed while listening to classical music.
