About the workIn 1826, Wilhelm Schadow became director of the Düsseldorf Art Academy. Commissioned by Prince Friedrich Wilhelm Ludwig, this painting testifies to the artist’s strong ties to the Prussian court. The prince was an art enthusiast and had resided in Düsseldorf since 1815; he had the castle on the Rhine, which can be seen behind him on the left, rebuilt a few years later. He gave this portrait of himself with his half-brother, Wilhelm zu Solms-Braunfels, to their mother, Friederike von Mecklenburg-Strelitz.
