About the workSimple forms suggest a busy street. Inspired by the developments in painting that August Macke discovered during his first trip to Paris in 1907, he began to devote himself to the interplay of form and colour. The same interest was also found among the Rheinische Expressionisten (Rhenish Expressionists) and the Munich artists’ association Der Blaue Reiter (The Blue Rider), with which Macke was in close contact. In 1914, he spent some time in Tunis, where he created watercolours and sketches. In this street scene from his hometown Bonn, he brought to life the impressions he gained there using bright light and earthy tones.
