Bathers in the Reed, 1910
MediumOil on canvas
(H x W)70,5 × 80 cm
About the workSix nude figures dominate the foreground of this painting, forming a vivid contrast to the radiant blue of the lake. The style of painting is wild and striking; the pure colours appear flat and the figures are rendered in a sketch-like manner. From 1909 to 1911, Erich Heckel frequently stayed at the Moritzburg lakes together with his artist friend Ernst Ludwig Kirchner so that they could devote themselves freely to nature and to painting. They sought a new unity between art and life.
