on display, room 004 About the workEven after the introduction of the pocket watch in the sixteenth century, portable sundials from exclusive manufacturers still enjoyed great popularity. The French watchmaker Claude Dunod settled in Düsseldorf around 1700. His elaborate and technically sophisticated watches were highly valued by members of the Düsseldorf court. On this watch, the coat of arms with the electoral hat, orb and chain of office on the large hour dial is a reference to its former owner, Elector Palatine Johann Wilhelm. In order to use the watch, it had to be oriented with the aid of the compass on the underside.
