About the workWinfred Gaul was just 30 years old when he created this picture and had the opportunity to present it along with three others at the highly respected second documenta exhibition in Kassel. At that time one of the youngest members of Art Informel, Gaul’s paintings only featured colour and traces of drawing, which is also expressed in the matter-of-fact title of this work. He did not want to specify a theme; all that mattered to him was the paint on the canvas and the recognisable movements of the brush. This image is a free improvisation that is open to a number of symbolic interpretations and capable of evoking various feelings.
