on display, room 010.2Stones and rocks are a feature of many landscapes and thus of many landscape paintings. The motif of this naturalistic study is reminiscent of a rockslide, although the arrangement of the stones appears balanced. The light falling from the side emphasises the structure and colour of the stones, but their size remains indeterminate due to the lack of reference points. Eugène Dücker, a painter and professor based in Düsseldorf, produced many of his sketches directly in nature: pinholes in this support of this painting indicate that it was mounted on a mobile frame.
