not on displayMills were popular places in 19th century German literature and painting. Situated far away from settlements, the buildings were used, among other things, to emphasise the interaction between man and nature. The Düsseldorf painter Eduard Wilhelm Pose depicted a castle-like mill in an austere mountain landscape. The masses of rubble indicate the power of the water when the snow melts and draw the eye to two anglers. During his long walks, for example in the Middle Rhine Valley and the Ahr Hills, Pose collected motifs that he could use in landscape paintings such as this one.
