About the workElisabeth Baumann received her training between 1838 and 1845 from professors at the Düsseldorf Art Academy. Since women were not allowed to study at the art academy at that time, she was taught privately. She then moved to Rome and sought out motifs from the lives of ordinary Romans, such as that seen in this painting. The artist married the Danish sculptor Jens Adolf Jerichau in Rome in 1846 and from then on they worked and travelled extensively together. The mother of nine children was an active artist; after moving to Denmark, she was also commissioned to paint for the royal family.
