on display, room 006.1 About the workThis hand rests loosely on a surface. Similar to a detailed study, only a fragment of the arm has been rendered. As an artistic subject, hands are extremely challenging to reproduce, even for experienced artists. At the same time, they are the most important artistic tool for realising creative ideas in any medium. Around 1947, Pablo Picasso frequently used hands as a motif, including his own. This allowed him to experiment with modelling the surface in a schematic manner, which he then applied to other works.
