About the workIn 1845, the German-American painter Emanuel Gottlieb Leutze married Julie Lottner in Düsseldorf. Seven years later he produced this portrait of her brother, presumably as a memorial picture: Clement Lottner had emigrated to America. Leutze himself had begun his art studies in the USA and continued them in Düsseldorf, where he also painted for the American market. “Washington Crossing the Delaware”, which he completed in Düsseldorf around 1850, is still one of the most famous works of American art history. Leutze returned permanently to the United States in 1859.
