About the workWhen Andreas Achenbach painted this picture, he was just 16 years old. This was his first public achievement: despite his young age, he was able to display the painting in an exhibition by the Düsseldorf Art Association. The city’s art academy, Achenbach’s own place of education, is depicted here. The academy was located on the upper floor of the electoral palace. In the square, the artist portrayed what he described as “friends and loiterers who could always be seen there in the morning”. The realistic presentation of historically insignificant events was unusual at the time.
