About the workThe container depicts a large locust in flight and Egyptian harvesters. The glass artist Émile Gallé based the latter on a treatise on Egyptian art dating from 1882, but since the hieroglyphs within it had been truncated, it made no sense. Gallé held this small vessel in high esteem: he described it in his notes on an exhibition of 1884 and, according to the inscription, this Düsseldorf specimen or a piece equivalent to it was on display at the Paris Exposition in 1889. At that time, Egypt was exporting cigarettes to Europe with great success.
