About the workJesse or “Isai” is the father of King David. In the Bible, the prophet Isaiah references him: “And a shoot will come up from the stump of Jesse.” According to Christian belief, the line of Jesse’s descendants extends to Jesus, underlining the human origin of the Son of God. The pane is an original from the northern nave of Cologne Cathedral. During restoration in the nineteenth century, damaged panes were replaced by copies. The original head of Jesse was combined with a few additions to form a small portrait window.
