on display, room 038 About the workHere, the contemplation of art becomes itself the subject of the picture. The piece is part of a comprehensive series of works by the artist Thomas Struth, who once studied under Bernd and Hilla Becher at Düsseldorf’s art academy and is categorised as belonging to the Düsseldorf School of Photography. The painting “Liberty Leading the People” by Eugène Delacroix was on loan from the Louvre to the Tokyo National Museum. The emotionally, erotically and historically charged work was presented to the only vaguely recognisable audience in a tall, illuminated glass case. The setting resembles a cinema auditorium and prompts reflection on the relationship between art and spectacle.
