About the work
The first electric breast pumps from the 1920s were based on milking technology for cows. Swedish engineer Einar Egnell designed this model about 30 years later, which mimicked the intermittent pressure of a nursing baby. The device, which was expensive and heavy, was still primarily limited to hospitals. From 1990, mobile breast pumps allowed for more flexible use: They could be brought to work, for instance. These modern designs thus enable women to determine the feeding schedules of their infants and have been seen especially by feminist movements as symbols of female empowerment.
