About the workIn “Above and Below: Images from the Working World”, graphic designer and factory owner’s son Gerd Arntz depicts the daily rhythm of the interwar years and translates it into clearly divided structures – left and right, above and below. Social roles are recognisable in the details, but both the manufacturer’s wife and the workers remain faceless and interchangeable as individuals. Arntz published these motifs as woodcuts in very small editions in the 1920s and 1930s. In 1985, he then reissued them as screen prints in large editions, making them accessible to a wider audience.
