About the workIn 1925, the Dutch artist Johan Thorn Prikker was commissioned by the architect Wilhelm Kreis to create two glass mosaics for the opposing corner pavilions at the current Kunstpalast and NRW-Forum. Featuring abstract geometric motifs, the works are related to each other; their titles Der Tag (The Day) and Die Nacht (The Night) refer to the geographical position of the two structures, which are situated on a north-south axis. "Der Tag" is made of bright and golden mosaic tiles that symbolise light and gleam vividly when the sun shines into the pavilion from the south.
