About the workThe two female figures by the Düsseldorf sculptor Ernst Gottschalk were created in 1926 together with two bronze figures by his friend Bernhard Sopher on the occasion of the “GeSoLei” exhibition in 1926 for the west portal in the Ehrenhof. While Sopher’s sculptures were removed due to his Jewish origin, Gottschalk’s figures narrowly escaped being melted down for metal extraction in 1942. In 1935, Gottschalk helped Sopher flee to the USA and thus saved him from certain death.
