About the workIn 1878, a critic described the paintings by Paula Monjé exhibited in Berlin as "excellent works of the most vivid effect". Among them was probably this piece, which was painted in Düsseldorf. The artist lived here all her life and made a name for herself with genre paintings and portraits. After taking private lessons from the painters Wilhelm Sohn and Eduard von Gebhardt, she also taught herself. As a member of the Düsseldorf Women Artists' Association, Monjé campaigned for the admission of women to the art academy. However, this was only realised after her death.
