About the workThis headdress is based on a series of splendid “Goldhaube” gold bonnets from Austria, which originated around 1750 and were initially worn by bourgeois women on special occasions such as going to church or for festivities like christenings and weddings. This variety, with gold embroidery, a wide brim and a small, rounded head covering, emerged in Vienna in the early nineteenth century. The bonnet is held in place by a drawstring that is tied at the nape of the neck. This fashion spread along the Danube to Passau and the rural Lower Bavarian region.
