1900 – 1945

Expressionist painters such as Alexej von Jawlensky, Wassily Kandinsky, Ernst Ludwig Kirchner and Franz Marc, as well as other artists in their circles, such as Ida Gerhardi, Max Beckmann and Paula Modersohn-Becker, embarked on a search for new forms of artistic expression at the beginning of the twentieth century. Between the world wars, many artists such as Otto Dix, Hannah Höch and Gert H. Wollheim concentrated on socio-political issues.
