Handcrafts

In the historical Museum of Applied Arts in Düsseldorf, the different areas of the collection were often classified by material. Thus, bronze and pewter utensils from a religious context would be found in the same department as their secular counterparts; the same holds true for panel and enamel paintings, as well as silver decorative vessels and everyday objects from courtly and bourgeois society from the Middle Ages to the twentieth century. Applied arts from the Middle East, originating between the fourteenth and nineteenth centuries, constitute a focus of the collection.
