About the workThe closed eyes and half-open mouth illustrate the exact moment when the life force is extinguished. With this radical sculpture, Auguste Rodin finally broke away from the ossified beauty ideals of academy art in Paris. By means of a design that was as provocative as it was lifelike, he lent the onset of death a dramatic yet emotional vividness. To achieve this tension, Rodin used an expressive clash of finely carved and roughly hewn areas.
