About the workIf you look at this semi-spherical lampshade from above when the light is switched on, it looks like an atoll floating in the air – hence the Italian name “Atollo”. Its simple yet conceptually sophisticated configuration, which is based on three basic geometric shapes – a cylinder, a cone and a semi-sphere – was devised by the Italian architect and designer Vico Magistretti, who became internationally renowned for his interiors in the 1960s. He received the Compasso d’Oro, a prestigious Italian design prize, for the Atollo lamp in 1979.
