About the workThe existence of colour photographs as early as the nineteenth century may come as a surprise. In the 1870s, the Frenchman Léon Vidal patented the photochrome process – a photomechanical technique that employed up to twelve printing plates to achieve a brilliant application of colour. This elaborate procedure allowed for the reproduction of the finest details, thus showcasing the magnificent decorations on the jewellery box in all their glory. In this way, the photochrome itself becomes a precious treasure. The image was published in an expensive book intended to make artworks of national importance accessible to the citizens of France.
