on display, room 012 About the workColour photographs from the nineteenth century are rare. But these prints glow in vivid green, blue and red. The Frenchman Léon Vidal patented the elaborate process of photochromy in the 1870s, which involved hand-printing black and white photographs with colours. The image emphasises the magnificent decorations of the casket and at the same time becomes a valuable treasure in its own right. It was published in an expensive book that was intended to make art objects of national importance accessible to French citizens.
