About the workA gnarled forest landscape, shortly after a fresh snowfall. A stone with Germanic characters stands alone. All further human traces seem to have been swallowed up by the snow. Andreas Achenbach uses light to create a special atmosphere that evokes the sublime. This watercolour thus represents a shift in the art of the early nineteenth century: religious sentiments were no longer expressed only by means of Christian imagery, but could also be rendered visible through atmospheric depictions of nature.
