About the workThe most famous painting in the world is also one of the most copied. In the nineteenth century, artists realised copies for their own education or on commission. Prince Georg of Prussia, who lived in Düsseldorf and Berlin, commissioned the painter Moritz Röbbecke to make at least 17 copies between 1894 and 1900. Röbbecke worked directly in front of these masterpieces, which he reproduced in their actual sizes. He even painted the “Mona Lisa” on wood like the original – he not only wanted to perfect the motifs, but also the techniques. The cracks in the surface were imitated using dabs of paint.
