About the workThis book collates notes and drawings by Pietro Testa, a painter and printmaker who worked in Rome in the seventeenth century. The writings are based on his reading of texts about philosophy and art theory. Testa thus corresponds to the Renaissance idea of the learned artist who pursues painting as a science. These pages were first bound by the artist and collector Lambert Krahe in the eighteenth century. Krahe’s collection was available as learning material to students of the Düsseldorf Art Academy, which had been recently founded in 1773.
