About the workSeveral people push and pull a cart through a seemingly peaceful street. The depiction of a bread delivery in the Łódź ghetto by Polish-Jewish artist Zvi Hirsch Szylis is based on a drawing from 1942. In fact, the scene provides insight into an inhumane living situation: forced to move to the ghetto in 1939, Syzlis secretly painted everyday life there. Jewish forced labourers produced military equipment, uniforms and household goods for the German war economy on site, while barely receiving any food themselves. The artist survived deportation to the Dachau concentration camp in 1944. After the war, he recovered his works, which had been hidden in the former ghetto. Szylis exhibited this painting, among others, in a solo exhibition in Munich in 1950.
